About Us
Dear random clicker:
Mingus was founded by R. M. Boucher who earned his BFA at the esteemed Kansas City Art Institute. He has spent the past ten years working in broadcast journalism in national markets and has devoted the last 20 years to music.
Our mission here at Mingus Magazine is to provide you with the latest in music news, discoveries and releases. It is our aim to save you time by providing you with brief content designed to get you to the source and on with your life. We hope that you find our information relevant and useful in your hunt for the next song. With over a 100,000 artists working in the world today, it can be overwhelming to stay on top so please sign up for our newsletter. We keep them short.
It’s impossible to know everything. If you are in a band or know something we don’t, please click on the contactus button and tell us. We would love to help.
How we grade:
We look for creativity, technical ability, execution, relevance, influence, style, and lasting worth. The highest score we award is five stars. We could go to ten, but then why not go to a 100? Five is manageable. We consider an album three stars or better worth buying and anything under that to be a glorified single. So here’s how it works. To get five stars every song has to be great with four singles and at least 10 years on the shelf. Four and a half is the last bit minus the decade wait. For four stars an album must have three singles and five good songs. Three and a half is three singles and three good songs. Three stars must have two singles and three good songs. For two and a half stars the album needs two singles and one good song. Two stars equal two singles. If one and a half stars than the album only has one single and one good song. Should, god forbid, it gets one lone star then the album only has one single. Finally, if the album scores half a star then sadly there is only one ok song to be found. We don’t give zeros to zeros without a point in-between so don’t expect to see them.
